    Classic video game appreciation

    August 24, 2007

In order to get people psyched up for King of Kong, (which I totally want to see, people!) I offer the following. The video is a testment to the skill of a genuinely amazing player. The link under the video just plain frivolous fun. Enjoy!

    Yeaaaaah, I think I need to practice…

And because this appeals to my infantile sense of humor: Sexual Moments in Video Game History

    1. I thought of you yesterday when Bravo had a Projecy Runway marathon all day.

    2. Ugh, I am going to be so miserable when the new season starts because I won’t be watching!! Stupid comcast had to upgrade their cable and now we can’t get the good channels for free anymore. How am I going to live without hearing Tim Gunn sagely advising designers to “make it work”?!

    3. Sad to say, I have to call bullshit on the video. There are some things that are wrong, and on top of that, impossible to happen. I’m sorry to ruin your belief.

    4. I’m sorry to call bullshit on your bullshit, but the video’s real man. You can view the video in its original context on speeddemos.com and see for yourself. Andrew Gardikis is the official record holder at both SDA and Twin Galaxies for his five minute SMB run (his time is 5:08 at TG there because SDA and TG have slightly different rules about what tricks you can use and where they start the timer). But this stuff isn’t made up or modded. It’s played on an actual NES (emulators are forbidden), videotaped, and verified before they post them. Better keep practicing, my friend!

    5. Again have to say bullshit for the following reasons, Ms. I never beat Super Mario Bros…
1)In world 4-2, you don’t go down a pipe to get to the warp zone. You climb a vine that is in that set of blocks before you get to the pipes.
      And…
2)The pipes that he goes down in 8-4 are the wrong ones, and would not take him to Bowser.

      So, therefore, BULLSHIT!

      I win.

    6. Okay, look, both are explained by a glitch that was absolutley 100% part of the programming of the original game. You can see an explanation of it here (as well as other glitches) and then try it for yourself and see if you still think it’s impossible:
      http://tasvideos.org/SuperMarioBrosTricks.html#AlternatePipeGlitchesSmb1Smb2j

Once again, the video has been *verified* by people who are much bigger video game nerds than either you or I will ever be. Now, you can disagree with them for allowing this glitch to be exploited and not things like walljumping, whatnot, but the video is not fake or emulated. The guy is just really damn good. Deal.

    7. Then the people that verified it are doodie heads.

    8. I’ll take that as an admission of (grudging) acceptance ;-)
